Privacy Policy

CHECK-MATE ("the app") helps groups split a restaurant bill fairly. This policy explains what data the app handles.

What the app collects

Receipt photos. When you scan or select a receipt photo, the image is sent to a backend proxy operated by the app's developer, which forwards it to Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence to extract the merchant name, items, and totals directly. The image is used only to perform this extraction and is not stored by the proxy beyond the time needed to process the request. See Microsoft's privacy policy for how it handles data it receives: privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement.

Item and business name translation (optional). If a scanned receipt appears to be in a different language than the app's display language, the app offers to translate item names and/or the business name. If you use this feature, that text (not the photo itself) is sent to the same backend proxy, which forwards it to Microsoft Azure AI Translator. See Microsoft's privacy policy for how it handles data it receives: privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement.

Document scanning. The camera-based scan screen is provided by Google Play Services' ML Kit Document Scanner, which runs as part of Google Play Services rather than inside the app itself. See Google's Play Services privacy notice: policies.google.com/privacy.

Bill, group, and participant data. Receipt items, prices, participant names, and group lists you enter or that are recognized from a photo are stored only on your device (local app storage). This data is never uploaded to the app developer's servers and is not shared with any other party, unless you opt into Google Drive backup (see below), which saves your groups and saved participants to your own Google Drive. Deleting the app removes the local copy of this data.

Camera and photo library access. The app requests camera access to scan receipts and photo library access to choose an existing photo. Both are used solely for the purpose of capturing/selecting a receipt image to analyze.

Google Drive backup (optional). If you choose to back up your groups and saved participants, the app asks you to sign in with Google and uses the Google Drive API to save a backup file directly to a hidden, app-only folder in your own Google Drive (Drive's "appDataFolder" — a private space that no other app, including this app's own developer, can browse or access). The backup travels directly between your device and Google's servers; it is never sent to or stored by the app developer. See Google's privacy policy for how it handles your Google Account: policies.google.com/privacy.

What the app does not do

Data retention

Locally stored bill/group data persists on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. Receipt photos sent for OCR, and item/business names sent for translation, are not retained by the app's backend after the request completes. If you use Google Drive backup, the backup file persists in your own Google Drive until you delete it or revoke the app's access from your Google Account settings.
